TSN Radio 1290 (CFRW-AM) established in 1963 is a sports station owned by Bell Media. With spring 2016 Numeris Survey the channel was ranked tenth making an audience share of 3.8%. Broadcasting at 1290 kHz, the all-sports AM station started its journey as CJQM on November 1, 1963 followed by a FM station (CJQM-FM). CJQM-AM (TSN 1290)would broadcast on a frequency of 1470 kHz using full-time ERP of 5,000 watts. Winnipeg Broadcast Associates Ltd owned the channel at that time. In 1965 the CJQM-AM-FM was sold out to QM Winnipeg Ltd. In the same year (1965) the call-signs were changed to CFRW AM and FM. The slogan of the TSN was now Radio Winnipeg. In 1968 the Lakehead broadcasters acquired the FM and AM CFRW stations after the approval of CRTC. Somewhere in 1968 the Radio Winnipeg Ltd purchased the QM Winnipeg Ltd. In March 1970 Jim Pattison’s came up as a new stakeholder with the purchase of CFRW-AM-FM from a then bankrupt Radio Winnipeg Ltd. The wattage of the CJOR held station was increased from 5,000 watts to 10,000 watts. In 1974 the sale of the CFRW was finalized and completed in July 31, 1974.

Operated under the CHUM the frequency was switched from 1470 kHz to 1290 kHz after the CRTC approval in 1976. In 1983 the station became stereo. TSN turned to Adult contemporary format on May 4, 1987 with new call-letters: CIFX and branding: The Fox. Classical and oldies format was imported in the same year featuring the artists and music of the 80’s, 70’s, 60’s and beyond. The format of the TSN Radio 1290 was once again changed to Adult Pop Standard from Lite Rock and Talk on September 17, 2000; the call-signs now were CFST. On May 7, 2001 CFST joined All Sports Radio Network. The format once again suffered a change in August 2000 with the Oldies replacing the Sports. Current call letters were assigned to station in January 2003. On July 12, 2006 Bell Globemedia (Later CTVglobemedia) entered the scene to purchase the CFRW from CHUM Ltd. In 2007 the CFRW-Am among other 32 radios and some 21 specialty TV channels became part of Rogers Communications. TSN Radio 1290 once again turned to Sports Radio format changing its branding to Sports Radio 1290 in 2010. Potential audiences included males ranging from 25 to 54 y/o. The license of the TSN was renewed to August 31, 2019 in August 2012. Audiences can listen to the TSN Radio 1290 online with News, Sports Talk, audios, videos, contests (TSN Tailgate Parties, Caring For Kids, Massage Athletica Athlete of the Week, The 10K Summer Selfie Presented by Robertson College), Rona Roundtable events (MS Bike: Biking to the Viking) and more. Hockey teams particularly featured on the site as it is home to Winnipeg Jets, Blue Bombers (Toronto Blue Jays) and Moose Manitoba.
