ICE Fm Nunavut - CKIQ-FMIce 99.9 FM also recognized by its call-sign CKIQ-FM is an Iqaluit based station in the province of Nunavut. Northern Lights Entertainment has the ownership to the Hot AC and Rock station. The channel was launched after the applicant Nunavut Natautinga Ltd. received the approval from CRTC on December 13, 2002. Along with Adult contemporary music the offerings included locally produced content, information and talk programs and other community driver programing. The proposed and agreed upon included the inclusion of Inuktitut and French content. The New Triple 9 Ice FM would initially operate as English language commercial station operating at 99.9 MHz with and ERP of 537 watts. The launch of the Ice 99.9 is undated however it was somewhere in 2002. On March 2, 2009 Northern Lights Entertainment Inc. purchased the CKIQ from Nunavut Natautinga Ltd. In October of the same year (2009) the studio site average ERP and antenna height and pattern were changed. The average wattage after the change was 415 watts. CKIQ was rebranded as ICE FM in 2011. A relay transmitter CKIQ-FM-2 located in Rankin Inlet was ceased in 2009. The initial renewal spanning a seven year term was expired on August 31, 2009. You can listen to the 99.9 Ice online. Northern Lights Entertainment Inc. owns the station along with CKIQ-FM. CRTC approved the licensee to launch the station in February 2010. CKGC officially signed on air on March 25, 2011 using an ERP of 515 watts and frequency 103.5 MHz. The music from 60s, 70s, and 80s is regularly featured in the playlists of the Capital. The flagship station for Winnipeg Blue Bombers in CFL football and previously partnering with Manitoba Moose Hockey (currently St. John’s IceCaps) schedules a number of talk programs, headline, local and aboriginal news, weather, sports updates and more. CFFB Iqaluit 1230 AM - CBC Radio One Nunavut 91.1 FMCBC North Iqaluit 1230 AM comes under the CBC Radio One division of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The station started its broadcast on February 6, 1961 as CFFB Frobisher Bay. In 1966 the transmitter was powered with and ERP of 40 watts which was incremented to 250 watts in 1969 and the signal could be received at 1200 AM. Frequency was flipped from 1200 to 1210 kHz in 1971. By 1984 CFFB Frobisher Bay had an approx. 72% share of English and remaining 28% of Inuktitut content. The wattage was once again increased from 1,000 to 4,000 watts in January 1986. Frobisher Bay was renamed as Iqaluit on January 1, 1987 thus changing the branding to CFFB Iqaluit. By 1990 the channel had following relay broadcast transmitters: CBIL-FM Resolute Bay, CBII-FM Igloolik, CBIK-FM Pond Inlet, CBIH-FM Cape Dorset and CBIJ-FM Pangnirtung. Night-time Power of the CBC North was decreased from 4,000 to 1,000 watts in December 1992.

After the Nunavut got separated from Northwest Territories officially on April 1, 1999, and joined Canada as its northernmost and least populous territory, CBC North also joined the Nunavut. CFFB-1-FM and CFFB-2-FM airing on 101.9 FM are the other transmitters of CBC North approved by CRTC in the locations of Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk. Most recent repeaters of the station include CFFB-3, CFFB-4, CFFB-5, CFFB-6, CFFB-7 and CFFB-8, added to the station mostly in 2012. The last renewal done by CRTC in May 2013 will give another five year period to CBC North to remain serving the North until August 31, 2018. The CRTC approved the transmitter at Marystown on October 18, 1968, the AM facility had its studios in Marystown. Initially active on AM 570 and then using 740 AM the rebroadcaster swapped to FM band in 1980, however the ERP of 10,000 watt remained consistent. The current frequency of the FM is 90.3. CRTC renewed the license of the station on May 28, 2013 until August 31, 2018. The station started broadcasting in 1989 at 6160 kHz as a relay transmitter being sourced by CBN St. John’s and CFGB; the intent was to throw the programing of CBN and CFGB in the remote locations of Labrador. The source of content which was a part-time share from CFGB and CBN was changed to entirely CFGB Happy Valley in 1994 and thus CFGB became a full-time rebroadcaster. The license of the shortwave channel was renewed on May 12, 2009 along other siblings of CKZN-SW. In 2013 the license was renewed for a five year term from May 2013 to August 31, 2018. CBY-AM Newfoundland and LabradorCBC Radio One 990 Corner Brook, NL also known as CBY-AM is a public news and talk station owned by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. CBC Radio One was initially launched as VOWN as a pre-confederation West Coast radio by the Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland, which merged later into CBC, in 1943. By 1947 BCN became a family of three stations VONF St. John’s, VORG Gander and VOWN Corner Brook. The call-signs of all the siblings were changed when Newfoundland joined the Canada as its tenth state in 1949; VOWN Corner Brook was changed to CBY. CBY 990 AM would broadcast at 790 kHz and use a wattage of 1,000 watts in 1957. CBY was granted approval to switch the frequency from 790 kHz to 990 kHz. CBNA St. Anthony on August 2, 1969 was launched as a high-power (10,000 watts) broadcasting transmitter which covered a greater part of Great Northern Peninsula at 600 kHz.

A much needed addition was made when an FM transmitter for CBY (CBNF-FM) was launched at Bonne Bay with an ERP of 1,000 watts and on frequency 89.1 MHz in March 1987. FM transmitters for the Port-aux-Basques, St. Andrew’s, Deer Lake, Mount St. Margaret and couple others were launched replacing the respective low-power transmitters in the upcoming years. The CRTC endorsed the increase in wattage form 1,000 to 1,020 watts, decrement in EHAAT and maximum ERP in 2009. The licenses of CBY and all its rebroadcast transmitters were renewed on May 28, 2013 to August 31, 2018 by CRTC. VOAR Christian Family Radio Newfoundland and Labrador VOAR 1210 AM St. John’s, NL is a religious radio serving Canadians in Newfoundland and Labrador. AM Station owned by The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Newfoundland and Labrador first aired in 1929 was initially launched by Pastor Harold Williams as 8BSL using 10 watts. The channel was renamed 8RA in November 1930 and the power was increased to 25 watts. In 1931 the gospel station got its new call-signs: “VONA” – Voice of Newfoundland and Adventists. Oscar Hierlihy acquired the VONA in 1932. The call-signs were once again changed to VOAC in 1933 and the station was now airing at 1065 kHz. VOAR was finally the news call-letters taken by the station in 1938; the increased ERP was 100 watts and new frequency was 1230 kHz. In 19991 the effective radiated power of the station was increased from 100 to 10,000 watts and the news frequency was 1210 kHz with a change of transmitter site post the approval of CRTC.

590 VOCM Newfoundland and LabradorVOCM 590 AM St. John’s, NL is a News and Talk station owned by Newcap Radio. On October 19, 1936 Walter B. Williams under the banner of Atlantic Broadcasting Co. launched VOCM in St. John’s. Initial frequency taken by the channel was 1005 kHz powered by an ERP of 250 watts. In 1973 Williams Sr., Jr. and Joseph Butler established the Colonial Broadcasting System Ltd. The wattage was increased from 250 to 1,000 watts while the new frequency decided was 590 kHz in 1950. On September 1, 1958 VOCM increased its effective radiated power to 10,000 watts. CHCM Marystown and CKCM Grand Falls were launched in 1961. Colonial Broadcasting was renamed as Radio Newfoundland Ltd. in 1982.

930 Kixx Country - CJYQ-AM Newfoundland and LabradorKixx Country 930 AM launched on October 25, 1950 also known as (CJYQ-AM) is a St. John’s based station owned by Newcap Radio. Newfoundland Broadcasting Co. Ltd in 1949 wanted to setup an AM station in St. John’s hence applied to that time regulatory body Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for the required license. The proposed specifications for CJON 930 initially included an ERP of 5,000 watts and frequency of 930 kHz. The full-time wattage in 1959 was 10,000. Relay broadcast transmitters across NL in 1960 reached to four. CJON’s ERP was increased from 10,000 to 25,000 watts. CJON became CJYQ in 1978 following the separation and change of ownership; other call-sings for the relay transmitters were also changed. CHUM Limited took the ownership of CJYQ 930 Ltd form Don Jamieson on January 15, 1983. The company soon launched CFIQ 970 Harbour Grace in May 1983. NewCap Broadcasting Limited acquired the CJYQ and stations from CHUM Limited in 1989.

103.9 Kixx Country - CHVO-FMKixx Country 103.9 FM Carbonear, NL is a country music station owned by Steele Communications, a Newcap subsidiary. Also known as CHVO-FM the station first signed on air in October 1980 as a VOCM affiliate station. Originally owned by Colonial Broadcasting System Ltd, the AM station serving the region Conception Bay and area in Newfoundland was granted permission in January 1980 by CRTC. The proposed frequency and ERP was 850 kHz and 5000 watts respectively. Most of the programing of the station was locally produced though a part of content was borrowed from VOCM St. John’s. Charlie Spurrell was station manager at CHVO Country 560 AM. In 1985 the applicant’s request to swap the frequency of CHVO Carbonear was denied. The CRTC approved the change in frequency from 850 to 560 on June 1, 1990. CHVO and all other VOCM radio assets were acquired by Newcap in 2000. AM band of the CHVO was switched from AM to FM band on July 4, 2007 and the frequency was switched to 103.9 MHz with news ERP of 14,000 w.
