Kixx Country 930 AM launched on October 25, 1950 also known as (CJYQ-AM) is a St. John’s based station owned by Newcap Radio. Newfoundland Broadcasting Co. Ltd in 1949 wanted to setup an AM station in St. John’s hence applied to that time regulatory body Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for the required license. Relay broadcast transmitters across NL in 1960 reached to four. CJON’s ERP was increased from 10,000 to 25,000 watts. CJON became CJYQ in 1978 following the separation and change of ownership; other call-sings for the relay transmitters were also changed. CHUM Limited took the ownership of CJYQ 930 Ltd form Don Jamieson on January 15, 1983. The company soon launched CFIQ 970 Harbour Grace in May 1983. NewCap Broadcasting Limited acquired the CJYQ and stations from CHUM Limited in 1989.
